Idylls of the Queen by Phyllis Ann Karr

Description

Queen Guenevere is giving a dinner to honor King Arthur’s knights when one
guest, Sir Patrise, falls dead of poison. The dead man’s cousin accuses the
Queen of murder, and she is taken away, to be held until her trial by combat. If
her knight-champion wins, Guenevere will be declared innocent and freed; if he
loses, she will be burned to death as a murderer. She is unlikely to survive the
trial. Most of Britain’s mightiest knights were at the dinner, and therefore
cannot fight for the Queen. Her champion and secret lover, the invincible
Lancelot, has vanished. And, as Sir Kay realizes, trial by combat determines
only is who is the better fighter, not who is guilty. Kay knows the Queen is
innocent and an unsuspected murderer is loose in feud-filled Camelot–a murderer
who intended to kill a person or persons other than the obscure knight Patrise,
and who is poised to kill again. With the trial only days away, Kay joins with
the great knights Gawaine and Gareth and their half-brother, King Arthur’s
bastard son Mordred, in two quests: to find the missing Lancelot, and to uncover
the true murderer.

Shannon’s Express by Charles E. Friend [Hardcover]

Description

United States Marshal Clay Shannon is sent by the territorial governor to
investigate apparent attempts to stop the progress of a railroad being driven
through the high mountains. The railroad, whose successful completion will mean
the joining together of vast regions of the American West, is being subjected to
brutal acts of sabotage that threaten its very existence, and Shannon’s mission
is to find those responsible and end the threat.

The quest takes Shannon through brawling railroad camps, where workers of
many nations form a violent and often mysterious world where danger lurks for
Shannon at every turn, and in every shadow.

Here, in this strange new place, Shannon meets many strange new people–a
crippled railroad mogul and his contentious family, rowdy railroad workers
spoiling for a fight, an enigmatic Chinese doctor, and many others–some friend,
some foe, and all a challenge for a lone lawman striving against the odds to
solve a puzzle that includes mystery, conspiracy, and murder.

The birds of sadness by Marie-Térèse Baird [Hardcover]

Description

Melanie is a seventy-eight-year-old woman with an indomitable belief in herself – a will instilled by her long-dead father. When her grandaughter Juliet, a modern young career woman, becomes pregnant with an illegitmate child, Melanie prepares for the birth with a joyful belated flowering of her own. Juliet, however, is not prepared to compromise her career, and decides to have the pregnancy aborted. Shattered, Melanie falls into a slow decline. She is haunted by the voice of her father, a proud and charismatic man whose confidence – Melanie can do it – is her only grasp on life. As she nears the end, however, Melanie rediscovers her will, intelligence, and wit, and learns that the secret of life lies not in sad resignation, but in her spirit’s ability to conquer death.
